Classes and routes

Roads are arranged in predetermined routes. Classes 1, 2 and 3, including main roads, some collectors and larger rural routes, get priority. Classes 4 and 5 include local or rural roads and cul-de-sacs and follow later.

Cul-de-sacs are part of local-street work and sometimes need smaller equipment because a normal plow will not fit. Lower traffic and equipment requirements explain timing; the source does not guarantee a finish time for every street.

Ice treatment and unmaintained roads

Salt is applied to paved roads to prevent or melt ice. Sand is used selectively on snow-packed local intersections, curves and hills, not necessarily every metre of a street. The municipality tracks salt use and considers alternatives.

A few signed, low-traffic roads with no residents receive no winter maintenance. Do not assume every mapped road is a cleared winter route. Use the plow tracker and current notices when planning travel.

Snow-emergency parking

The Mayor, Chief of Police and Infrastructure and Engineering General Manager can declare a snow emergency. It bans road parking to give plows room and allow later snow removal.

The FAQ gives a rule of thumb of forecast 20 cm snowfall with 40 km/h winds, not an automatic declaration at that number. Avoid street parking during or immediately after snow when plowing is still needed. Do not park across a sidewalk or at the very end of a driveway.
